Greenberg Roofing's 30 year relationship with Ladish Malting

Ladish Malting Company

One of the most important measures of the success of any roofing company
is its ability to maintain long term relations with customers. Ladish Malting
Company, in Spiritwood, ND, is one of the best examples of Greenberg's
ability to perform in a manner that has resulted in a 30 year relationship.
It was 1973, when construction began on what has become one of the largest
malting facilities in the upper Midwest. Ladish Malting was based in
Milwaukee, WI with plants in Jefferson Junction, WI and Spiritwood, ND.

Klug & Smith, a general construction company from Milwaukee, contacted our
office and requested that we bid the project. Greenberg initially declined
to bid the job, but Ladish Malting made a direct contact with Greenberg
and talked of how they had researched our company and only wanted Greenberg on the job. We were awarded the job and so began one of our largest running client relationships.

We began work on the multifaceted building with varying levels (up to 220
feet high). The Malt Houses, Train Sheds, Kilns, Head Houses, Steep
Buildings, Attemperators and Silos were constructed year after year and
phase after phase, amounting to over 3,000 squares of new roof construction
on various levels and configurations. The roof assembly consisted of both
concrete and metal decks, rigid fiberglass insulation, 2 or 3 plies of
glass cap sheet, and a mineral surface glass cap sheet, all mopped in hot
asphalt. The flashings consisted mostly of 22 gauge stainless steel and even the fasteners were stainless steel.

The project presented special challenges for Greenberg. While working in
the Heat Recovery Rooms access was only allowed four hours per day. The
structures were extremely high, which made wind a factor each day.

Over the years there have been many changes including safety considerations. There have been permanent guard rails installed on many roof areas now and more are installed each year. Elevators have replaced the old man lifts.
It is often said that it's hard to get to the top, but it's even harder to
stay there. Greenberg, with our effort to deliver superior workmanship,
productivity, and service, has proven through our work with customers like
Ladish, that we have what it takes to stay there.
