In August of 1995
a hail storm carrying stones the size of baseballs hit the
city of Minot, ND. Millions of dollars of damage was done
to homes, vehicles and businesses on the south half of the
city. One of the casualties of the storm was the roof of the
Dakota Square Shopping Center.
Dakota Square is the primary shopping destination
for northwestern North Dakota. Located in south Minot and
anchored by Herberger's, JCPenney, Sears and Target, the regional
shopping center provides customers with a 12-screen movie
theatre, a food court, numerous restaurants and a great combination
of national and local retailers.
This project was 3,480 squares and required over 55 semi-truckloads
of manufactured roofing products including insulation; glass
ply sheet and asphalt. Dakota Square was easily the largest
re-roofing contracts ever undertaken in North Dakota.
Work began in May 1996 and was completed
early in 1997. There were over 25,000 total labor hours to
complete the project. Besides the magnitude of the project,
there were several challenges. There was a maze of A/C units,
gas pipes, and electrical conduits, which greatly complicated
transporting of new and demolition materials. 12 ramps were
constructed to facilitate movement of crew and materials from
one section of roof to another.
One of the remarkable things about the
project is the fact that it all ran so smoothly. John Langraud,
the inspector on the project, said GR and their employees
stand out from others he’s worked with. “I was
very impressed with the way everyone worked together, the
daily organization of work, the work ethics, and the skill
displayed in this job….Thank you for making my job easier
than most.”
It was a huge project, and more importantly,
a hugely successful one. Successful because of a tremendous
effort by management, administrative, sales and GR field personnel.
